The Beginning

As we launch the celebration of the YMCA’s 140th year in the Inland Northwest, we thought it would be a fun opportunity to look back on some of the highlights of our first 14 decades.

We start our story in 1884. The place: Spokane Falls in the Washington Territory (Washington wouldn’t become a state until 1889, “Falls” wouldn’t be dropped from the city’s name until 1891). The region was in the grip on an economic boom driven largely by the discovery of gold, silver and lead and a large contingent of young, single men (many leaving home for the first time) flocked to Spokane in the hopes of making their fortune. A group of prominent local businessmen recognize these men need a positive place to gather and charter the Spokane YMCA as an alternative option to the vices that typically arise around such groups. Offering everything from athletic opportunities and the rental of rooms to social gatherings and employment services, the new Y is a place for those who wish to be part of their community in a safe and welcoming environment.

While much has changed in 140 years, the YMCA of the Inland Northwest still serves as this welcoming environment for all. Those new to town often join the Y quickly upon arrival as they recognize that it can serve as a place to build community in their new home. Families enjoy opportunities to bond and grow with youth sports, swim lessons, and high-quality childcare programs. Those in need know that regardless of their current situation, and because of the generosity of our donors, the Y will never turn anyone away due to the financial constraints.

Join us over the next month as we connect our historic past to the present and the future of serving our community. And as you do, we hope you’ll consider supporting the Y’s 140th Anniversary Campaign. From those first businessmen who raised the funds to bring the Y to Spokane to our donors today who make sure the Y can welcome everyone in our doors, the support the community has provided has been instrumental in the role the Y has played in serving our community as the oldest non-profit in our region. Your support today will help change lives into the future.
